Jean-Yves Thériault is a living legend in Kickboxing. Born on January 15th, 1955, he began his Martial Arts career in Jiu-Jitsu in 1972 where he achieved the rank of blue belt. In 1976, after only six months of training under the direction of Kyoshi John Therien he won his first Kickboxing competition. Two and a half years later, and a lot of hard work and determination he became the Canadian Middleweight Kickboxing Champion. In 1980, he won the title of the World Middleweight Kickboxing Champion, a position that he held for 15 years! He is a natural athlete who trains extremely hard, and has the greatest disposition. His ring name is "The Iceman" due to his intimidating icy stare and his cool demeanor in the ring.
Since he became a Champion, Jean-Yves has worked with many groups and charities, such as, the Big Brothers, Children's Wish Foundation, Laucan and numerous others. He is author of a book on his winning techniques and has a series of video cassettes on the science of combat sports. He is the subject of an hour and a half film produced by the National Film Board. He was voted Athlete of the Decade by the Sports Writers Association of his home province, New Brunswick.
Since his retirement on December 1st, 1995, (a 3rd Round Knockout of Marcus Reid) Jean-Yves still trains 5 days a week and teaches classes exclusively at all Therien Jiu-Jitsu & Kickboxing Schools. He is a role model for all Martial Artists today; he is humble, honest and down to earth. He is a devoted father and a friend to all of his students.
Today, Jean-Yves has also become a world-class promoter for the sport of kickboxing. With the aid of his friend Kyoshi John Therien, he is giving new, young fighters the opportunity to realize their dreams in the “Iceman Amateur Kickboxing Circuit.” He is a true ambassador for the sport giving back so other ambitious athletes can realize their dreams.
If it’s kickboxing in Canada, its “The Iceman” Jean-Yves Theriault.
Shihan Hugo Bleys 7e dan
Curriculum Vitae Shihan Hugo Bleys 7e Dan Jiu-Jitsu
In 1965 Hugo Bleys started his Jiu-jitsu career with Francois van Haesendonck and together with a few friends they practiced in an old shaft,
later on joining the Samurai club with sensei Perun 1e Dan who used the techniques of Van Haesendonc.
After earning his bluebelt 4 years later he changed clubs due to internal issues and began training with Prof. Pieters 4 Dan in the Katyclub, and discovering that Prof. Pieters was his uncle.
Beginning again whitebelt, Hugo started over learning a different style of Jiu-Jitsu than he originally trained in, as Prof. Pieters used different techniques. This later proved to be a good thing
increasing the knowledge in two different types of jiu-jitsu.
In 1980 Hugo joined with Prof. Pieters the WJJKO and in 1981,and accomplished his 1e Dan, with Prof. Ott Victor 7e Dan was a member of the jury.
From that moment Hugo started teaching in Prof. Pieters clubs to give extra practice to the students.
On a course at Geislingen Germany he met Robert Clark and at this occasion was shown the 1e Jiu Jitsu Kata, and was given 20 minutes to learn it.
In Belgium they still perform this Kata amongst 3 others made.
Trough the Demo team lead by “ Prof. Pieters” ; many contacts were made with other Jitsuka’s such as Jan De Jong aso.
In 1986, as a 4e Dan Hugo became the sensei of Prof. Pieters Katyclub and so organized the monthly federal practice training and was still the leader of the demo team.
In 1987 an over-all organization in Flanders was founded with 25 clubs and Prof. Pieters as president of the WJJKO/B . Hugo started a second club in Brussels.
1991 he took part at the “ Pasqua del Budo” a demonstration trip trough Italy with S. Bertoletti.
In 1992 Prof. Pieters asked him to take over the WJJKO because of his age and illness.
August 1992 Robert Clark, S Bertoletti and Noble officially appointed a representative for the WJJKO in Belgium.
Since 1994 they started the 2 yearly International courses in Belgium which were very successfully attended with 300 participants from all over Europe. Also participated in many European courses in Belgium and abroad; as there are: Jönkoping ( S) Swabisch Gmund (D) Lauenburg (D) Vevey (CH) ….
The last International course was organized in Belgium in 1998 with teachers as Clark; Pieters; Bertoletti; Wall; Kaufmann; Schenck and the coordinators of the WJJKO/B .
On that occasion Hugo received his 7e Dan from R.Clark and S.Bertoletti. A day to remember.
The next day they organized the first European Open Combat and Kata competition and with over 60 participants it was a great success to all.
End 1998 at Lübz they met Alain Sailly and Mike Wall we discussed the terms to join the WKF and after a internal information round we decided to join and at the same time to start our own Association with the same people and disciplines who where joined in the WJJKO/B
This new federation cold AMAC.
This all could not be done without the superb training of Grand Master Prof. Pieters and my trainings partner Sylvain van den Bosch 6de Dan .
